Coach Westering’s mustache; keep it or shave it: He can keep it because it goes with his '70s perm but mustaches are sick.
In their first glimmer of hope since losing their coach and quarterback in the offseason, the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen used an incredible performance by quarterback Jericho Toilolo to defeat La Verne 45-24. Toilolo completed 32 of 39 passes for 464 yards and six touchdowns. He also ran for 38 yards netting 502 on the afternoon. It was the Kingsmens’ first win of the season.
With just under eight minutes to play in the third quarter, the outlook was bleak for the UW-Whitewater Warhawks, trailing 28-10 on the road. However, the Warhawks owned the fourth quarter scoring 25 unanswered points including two touchdown strikes and a two point conversion from Danny Jones to Matt Gifford. Jones finished 16-30 for 204 yards.
Luther place kicker Tyler Pease, set an Iowa Conference and Norse school record, with six field goals. Pease made all six of his attempts kicking the ball threw the uprights from 27, 33, 27, 22, 28 and 26 yards. Prior to today's record setting performance, Chris Gardner (Loras) and Carlos Martinez (Buena Vista) shared the record with five field goals in a single game. Martinez placed his name in the record book in the Beavers 29-7 victory over the Norse in 1999. Gardner kicked his five field goals against Wartburg in 1988. The Norse won 25-20.
Things looked rosy for the Linfield Wildcats after sprinting out to a 19-0 lead with just a few ticks off the clock in the second quarter against Willamette. However, in true fable fashion, the Willamette tortoise started to move and slowly, yet steadily, chipped away at the Wildcat lead. By halftime, Linfield’s lead was down to 22-20 and it was a game again. It went back and fourth three times in the fourth quarter before Matt Bicocca’s field from 42 yards out split the uprights with four seconds remaining. It was his second of the game and biggest of his career. It gave the Bearcats a 33-32 victory and confirmation that slow and steady wins the race. It is the second straight year the Wildcats have started 1-2.
On an overcast and rainy day in Menomonie, UW-Stout used two strikes by their defense in holding off UW-Platteville 28-7. The Blue Devils returned two interceptions for touchdowns including a 27 yarder by Chad Parker and a 62 yarder by Matt Kuenzli. Two strikes of lightning followed delaying the game nearly an hour before the game could be finished.
In Saturday’s 19-18 nailbiter, St. Thomas and Bethel combined for six touchdowns and a paltry 1-6 on PATs or two point conversions. In fact, the PAT on Bethel’s first touchdown was no good but a St Thomas penalty gave them another try which kicker Kris Pulford connected on. The two teams then went 0-for-5 the rest of the way including three incomplete passes by St. Thomas and a failed rush and intercepted conversion by Bethel. Tommie fans will have you believe the Pulford PAT was the difference. At 0-4, there are bigger issues for Sat. Thomas than that PAT.
St. Olaf kicker/punter Paul Fortman was 8-for-8 on PATs, hit his only field goal attempt from 38 yards, blasted his only (non-blocked) punt 59 yards to the Gusties' 5-yard line and made two touchdown-saving tackles on a kickoff return and a blocked punt in the Oles' 59-19 win over Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday. His eight PATs extended his streak to 36 without a miss, dating to week nine of 2006. He's hit each of his 32 extra point attempts this season and has gone 4-of-6 on field goal attempts including 4-for-4 inside 40 yards. He leads the MIAC in punting (39.9 yards/punt).
• UW-Whitewater’s come-from-behind 35-28 victory at UW-La Crosse was its 16th consecutive WIAC win.
• In the last two weeks, St. Olaf quarterback Matt Penz has thrown for 773 yards and 11 touchdowns.
• UW-River Falls wide receiver Michael Zweifel eclipsed his own school record for receptions in a game with 12 catches for 144 yards.
• Redlands’ 12-0 shutout of Chapman on Saturday is its first since the 2002 season.
• Concordia-Moorhead running back Adam Swingdorf has scored a touchdown in every game this season and has posted at least two touchdowns in three of the team's five games.
• UW-Oshkosh kicker Lucas Raschke scored his 223th career point, an Oshkosh record.
• Saturday’s 45-42 victory by UW-Stevens Point over UW-River Falls marks the highest score game in 63 all-time meetings between the two rivals.
• Central punter Kurtis Brondyke again flashed his propensity for pinning opponents deep as he landed a punt inside the 1-yard line for the fifth time in three weeks.
No. 18 St. Olaf at No. 4 St. John’s, Collegeville, Minn., 1 p.m.: Maybe, just maybe this is the year that this game lives up to the hype. It pits the Oles and their 51.2 points per game offense against the Johnnies who are giving up a mere 11.7. The Johnnies have dominated the last two years but after serious scares against UW-River Falls and Carleton last week, this could be the year for the Oles. This game also pits the two best quarterbacks in the league against each other in Alex Kofoed and Matt Penz. Throw in the fact that it is Johnnie homecoming and it might just be the best slice of football in Minnesota this day.
