With a 41-7 victory over Carleton on Saturday, legendary St. John’s coach John Gagliardi picked up win No. 400 at St. John’s. Gagliardi, the all-time leader in career coaching wins, now has a career record of 400-111-10 at St. John’s in 53 seasons and an overall record of 424-117-11 in 57 seasons. He has never lost to the Knights in 23 games.

Whitewater washes over Lakeland
After swinging back and forth for the first 19 minutes of the game, Lakeland and UW-Whitewater were in a 14-12 battle. By the final whistle, the Warhawks had run off 59 straight points for a dominating 73-12 victory. Justin Beaver, Derek Stanley, Jim Leszczynski, Andy Lange and Neil Mrkvicka all contributed two touchdowns for the Warhawks.

Meidt-y big win
St. Olaf coach Chris Meidt led St. Olaf to their first win over Bethel since 1992. Meidt, a 1992 graduate of Bethel, was the Royals’ offensive coordinator from 1995 to 2001.

Counting Pioneers
In their first game of what will only be a four game season, the Lewis and Clark Pioneers lost 52-17 to 2004 SCIAC champion Occidental. The box score lists only 28 Pioneers participating in the contest including Mike Brooder who went both ways on the offensive and defensive lines. For comparison, Occidental had 55 players participate in the game.

Elliott is Brett-er than the rest
Linfield All-American quarterback Brett Elliott had an off day on Saturday — he only threw four touchdowns. However, those four were enough to catapult Linfield to a 45-7 win over Stevens Point and perch Elliott on the top of the Linfield career touchdown passes list with 71 touchdowns in 15 games. The 71 touchdowns break Tyler Mathews’ record of 69 set from 2000-03.

Beaver dam
Buena Vista only managed 138 yards of total offense on Saturday which is usually associated with a Saturday afternoon of getting thoroughly dominated. In this case, it was the Beavers who dominated shutting out Loras 14-0. Cornerback Chad Hinrichs led the way in this defensive battle intercepting three passes and returning one 55 yards for a touchdown. He was named IIAC player of the week for his performance.

We’re goin’ streakin’
Linfield and Concordia-Moorhead both have long conference winning streaks. The Wildcats haven’t lost a NWC game since Sept. 29, 2001 — a streak of 19 games. Concordia, with their 31-20 win on Saturday, pushed its MIAC conference winning streak to 11 games. Their last loss was on October 25, 2003 to St. John’s.

Quote Machine:
"I know that people are going to say that our defense lost the game on that last drive, but it's our defense that kept us in this game. It's just unfortunate we weren't able to stop that last drive."
— Redlands coach Mike Maynard to the Redlands Daily Facts following the last minute 28-25 loss to No. 11 Trinity (Texas)

Games to Watch
Cal Lutheran at Occidental, Los Angeles, 7 p.m.:
An improved Cal Lutheran team should give the Tigers a good battle. Kingsmen quarterback Danny Jones and Tigers quarterback Andy Collins should throw for a ton of points. Occidental won 24-7 in 2004 but look for a closer shootout to take place in 2005.

Wartburg at Luther, Decorah, IA, 1:00 pm
IIAC coaches picked Wartburg to win the conference in 2005. They picked Luther to finish second. This battle between league favorites should show us just how much the coaches know. Look for Luther’s Tyler Sherden and Wartburg’s Dan Hammes to run all over the opposing teams defense. Wartburg won 16-7 in 2004.
