Trinity University and Hardin-Simmons claimed important victories as week two in the South region's season unfolded.
Trinity relied on a solid first-half performance to defeat McMurry 27-19. The Tigers established a ground attack, taking pressure off of returning Melberger Award winning quarterback Michael Burton. Hardin-Simmons traveled to Wisconsin-Whitewater and claimed a major regional victory for the south in its season opener.
Next week's action features another key Texas battle and the continuation of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference league schedule.
Last weekend's key South Region games:
TRINITY 27, McMURRY 19 -- Trinity (2-0) exploded for 20 second-quarter points, then held on to earn a 27-19 over McMurry (1-1) in an in-state battle at San Antonio. Trinity running back Damond Garza gained 162 yards on 30 carries to pace the Tigers offense. Trinity pushed a 13-10 lead to 20-10 at halftime by recovering a fumble then cashing in for a touchdown in the final two minutes. McMurry rallied with a nine-play, 65-yard fourth quarter drive to close within 20-17. Trinity responded with a 10-play, 75-yard march of their own to push the lead to 27-17. McMurry drove inside the Trinity five-yard line on the ensuing possession, only to fumble at the two-yard line. On Trinity's third down play, McMurry sacked quarterback Michael Burton, forcing a fumble that the Tigers recovered in the endzone for a safety to close within eight points. McMurry took over at midfield following the free kick and failed to gain a first down, securing an emotional victory for Trinity.
HARDIN-SIMMONS 25, UW-WHITEWATER 7 - Hardin-Simmons (1-0) rallied from a seven-point first-quarter deficit to earn a convincing road victory in its season opener.
